Abstract—Although existing researches have considered the automatic repeat request and forward error correction schemes to provide reliable communication, the former suffers frequent retransmissions and the latter incurs bandwidth overhead in wireless sensor networks. In order to reduce the number of retransmissions and support efficient correction, existing studies have proposed many packet combining based error recovery schemes for wireless sensor networks. This study investigates the recovery performance of these packet combining based error recovery schemes. This study provides the mathematical analysis and simulation results, using the bit error rate and the packet length as major parameters. The results present that different schemes show a tradeoff between the recovery speed and storage space overhead.
